This site is dedicated to the fight to end human slavery. I am aiming to compile practical ideas about what we can DO to fight this. As a Christian I believe that Jesus came to, and sends us to:
…bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from the darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord`s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
Isaiah 61 v 1-3
Hide the fugitives, do not betray the refugees. Let the Moabite fugutives stay with you; be their shelter from the destroyer.` The oppressor will come to an end, and destruction will cease; the aggressor will vanish from the land. In love a throne will be established.
Isaiah 15 v 3-5
I believe that through a balance of prayer and action we can see many broken peoples lives redeemed and healed. It is a problem that needs long term solutions -
- prevention, working in places where poorer people are economically desperate to provide practical alternatives to selling, through education and skills.
- Through the provision of safe housing/ places to heal from the emotional and physical trauma of slavery.
- Re-training and job provision so that people can live and earn money.
- Through legislation which aims to protect victims and promote social justice.
We wait for the kingdom, but, while we are here we need to build it little by little – to make space for God to work. My prayer is that through collaboration, co-operation and compassion we can all work together to raise peoples awareness of this terrible injustice and equip them to take steps towards fighting this.
